Brain Plasticity and the Integrated Brain Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is synaptic plasticity?
The adaptability/changeability of neural connections.
What is Long Term Potentiation (LTP)?
If a synapse is constantly activated, then the synaptic connection becomes stronger. This is because the post synaptic neuron becomes more sensitive.
What is Long Term Depression (LTD)?
The weakening of synaptic connections. The post synaptic neuron becomes less sensitive to the neurotransmitters.
What is neurogenesis?
The generation of new neurons.
How does motor control work?
Brain selects relevant sensory cues depending on the current task. Then appropriate motor actions are executed.
What are the two meanings of emotion?
Positive or negative feelings we experience.
Physiological changes- e.g. heart rate, rapid breathing.
What are the three components of emotion responses?
Behavioural, Autonomic, Hormonal
What are behavioural emotional changes?
Muscular changes that are appropriate for the situation. E.g Growling and bearing teeth when being defensive.
What are autonomic emotional changes?
Activating either parasympathetic (rest and digest) or sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous system.
What are hormonal emotional responses?
Adrenal glands releasing adrenaline.
