Define neuroscience
The study of the function and structures of the nervous system
What is behaviour?
The observable actions of humans and animals
What limits changes to our understanding of the brain?
Religious/moral views, methodological limitations, serendipity (reliance on chance discoveries), scientific conservatism
What did Hippocrates do?
Proposed that the brain controls the body.
What did Rene Descartes do?
Was the first to discuss interactions between the mental and the physical.
What did Luigi Galvani do?
First to suggest that nerve signals were electrical.
What did Paul Boca and Carl Wernicke do?
Discovered that certain parts of the brain were responsible for certain functions. Noticed that those missing parts of the brain couldn’t do certain things.
