Memory Flashcards
(9 cards)
Define Memory
A set of storage systems and processes for encoding, storing, and retrieving information.
Tell me about Atkinson and Shiffrins (1968) Multi-store memory model
Stimulus is registered by sensory memory. Information that is paid attention to enters STM. Information that is rehearsed goes to LTM. When info needs to used, it is retrieved from LTM.
What is encoding?
The processes involved in attending to and acquiring info from experiences and mental processes
Where are encoded memories stored?
They are consolidated in memory traces and stored in networks of neurons throughout the brain.
Where in the brain would store the sights of an experience?
The visual cortex
Where in the brain would store the emotions felt during an experience?
The amygdala
Is retrieval reconstructive and therefore sometimes prone to error?
HELL YEAH IT IS
What is the sensory memory?
A temporary holding area for info between sensory processes and later cognitive processes.
Tell me about George Sperling’s (1960) Experiment
Measured the capacity and duration of iconic memory.
FULL REPORT
Participants shown 12 letters in a box shape for a brief moment. On average, could identify 4 letters.
PARTIAL REPORT
Shown 12 letters, then given a verbal cue to read out one line of the letters. Results were much better. Meaning that all 12 items were available, but decayed before they could recall them. Found that only one item could be recalled after half a second
