Models of the Mind and Divisions of the Nervous System Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is Comparative Neuroanatomy?
What is Comparative Anatomy?
Comparing brain structures across species.
What does the Allen Brain Institute do?
Creates very detailed maps of brain regions.
What does the Human Brain Project do?
Simulates neurons on a computer.
What is the Central Nervous System?
Contains the brain, spinal cord, and retina.
What is the peripheral nervous system?
Network of nerves that extend from the CNS throughout the body.
Sends messages from the brain to control muscle movement.
Receives info about body position, pain and temp.
What are the two divisions of the PNS?
Somatic and Autonomic systems.
What is the Somatic Nervous system?
Subdivision of the PNS.
Receives sensory information from the sensory organs and controls movement of skeletal muscle.
Efferent nerves- send signal from brain to muscle
Afferent nerves- send signal from muscle to brain.
Also includes spinal nerves.
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Includes smooth muscles, cardiac muscle, and glands. Mediates involuntary functions of the nervous system.
What are the divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
Parasympathetic, Sympathetic, and Enteric nervous systems.
When is the parasympathetic nervous system used?
When the body is in “rest and digest” mode
When is the sympathetic nervous system used?
When the body is stressed or under threat. Activates fight or flight response.
