Changes to character over time?
A
- 1600s saw silk weavers from France which influenced architecture to have large windows
- 1800s saw Jewish immigrants and area featured over 40 synagogues
- 1880s- pollution blown east from central London, crime and prostitution, disease
Jack the Ripper in 1888
1970s- Jewish migrants left the area and were replaced by an influx of Bangladeshi immigrants

Demographic changes? (6% ers)
A
- 44.4% of population of Asian heritage
- only 6% of residents over 65 (more fatalities due to air pollution?)
- decrease in white population by 6% over 10 years
- large working age population with 77% between 18 and 64
- privately rented properties have also increased 6% which implies increased income and gentrification
- 50% of the area is part of the 2nd most deprived decile but areas have generally experienced over a 4% decrease in rank
- qualitative data such as census and IMD maps are reliable but don’t tell lived experience

Qualitative representation?
A
- stik painting shows multiculturalism and the uniting of cultures
- deprivation map by Charles Booth shows most areas are comfortable but some areas south of Spitalfields show viscous, borderline criminal areas of the lowest class
- the brick lane I see by sally flood shows dirty polluted environment due to “cars and vans add to the pollution with heavy exhaust fumes” and gentrification/hipsters with “where the do gooders salve their conscience”
- based off lived experience but more likely to be bias as just one opinion

Gentrification?
A
- Old Truman Brewery planned to be redeveloped into 5 storey shopping mall that creates jobs but threatens existing local businesses
- area has become more desirable to young people so house proves have increased forcing long term residents to leave . 2/3 of 300,000 new houses classed as not affordable
- Fournier streets features big window houses split into flats that sell for over £1.5 million each
- cereal killer cafe
- 2020 save brick lane campaign aimed to fight policies that harmed working class families by collecting over £20,000 to legally fight new developments
- local group Nijor Manush empowers local Bengali powople as cultural dilution is occurring
- tourism has increased as has wealth etc
