(18 cards)
Cosmology
The science of the origin and development of the universe.
Universe
All existing matter and space considered as a whole; the cosmos.
Big Bang Theory
A theory that the universe may have been created in a huge explosion of at least 12 billion years ago.
Emission Spectrum
A spectrum of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a source.
Spectrometer
An apparatus used for recording and measuring spectra, especially as a method of analysis.
Wavelength
The distance between successive crests of a wave.
Frequency
The rate at which something occurs or is repeated over a particular period of time.
Expansion
The action of becoming larger or more extensive.
Contraction
The process of becoming smaller.
Galaxy
A system of millions or billions of stars, together with gas and dust.
Interstellar Cloud
An interstellar cloud is generally an accumulation of gas, plasma, and dust in our and other galaxies.
Red Shift
The displacement of spectral lines toward longer wavelengths.
Blue Shift
The displacement of the spectrum to shorter wavelengths in the light coming from distant celestial objects.
Doppler Effect
An increase or decrease in the frequency of sound, light, or other waves as the source and observer move toward or away from each other.
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation
Newton’s law of universal gravitation states that every particle attracts every other particle in the universe with a force.
Plasma
The colorless fluid part of blood, lymph, or milk, in which corpuscles or fat globules are suspended.
Solar System
The collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit around the sun.
Absorption Spectrum
A spectrum of electromagnetic radiation transmitted through a substance.
