bulk and surface properties of matter Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is nanoscience?
The study of small particles that are between 1 - 100 nanometres
Nanoscience focuses on materials at the nanoscale.
How many meters are in a nanometre?
1nm = 1x10-9m
This is a fundamental unit in nanoscience.
What is the equivalent of a micrometre in meters?
1um = 1x10-6m
Micrometres are larger than nanometres.
What are particles in the air, such as pollutants and pollen, called?
Particulate matter (PM)
PM is a significant environmental pollutant.
What are coarse particles often referred to as?
Dust
Coarse particles have diameters 10 times bigger than particulate matter.
What is the diameter range for fine particles?
Between 0.1um (100nm or 1x10-7m) and 2.5um
Fine particles can have significant health impacts.
What happens to the surface area to volume ratio of a cube as its side decreases by a factor of 10?
It decreases by a factor of 10
This concept is important in understanding nanoparticle behavior.
What distinguishes nanoparticles from bulk materials?
They have a high surface area to volume ratio and different properties
This difference leads to unique applications.
What is the advantage of using nanoparticles in applications?
Smaller quantities of material are needed to be as effective as normal sized particles
This can lead to cost savings and reduced material usage.
List some applications of nanoparticles.
- Medicines
- Electronics
- Cosmetics
- Sun creams
- Deodorants
- Catalysts
Nanoparticles are versatile in various industries.
