reactivity of metals Flashcards
(10 cards)
What do metals produce when they react with oxygen?
Metal oxides
These reactions are called oxidation reactions.
What happens to metals when they react?
They lose electrons to form positive ions.
What is the order of reactivity in the reactivity series from most to least reactive?
Potassium, sodium, lithium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, (carbon), zinc, iron, tin, lead, (hydrogen), copper, silver, gold.
What can a more reactive metal do to a less reactive metal?
Displace it from a compound.
What will metals more reactive than hydrogen do when they react with acid?
Produce hydrogen gas.
What happens when hydrogen gas is produced?
It ‘pops’ with a lighted spill.
How can metals less reactive than carbon be extracted from their ores?
By reduction with carbon.
What does reduction involve?
The loss of oxygen.
What is the definition of reduction?
The gain of electrons.
What is the definition of oxidation?
The loss of electrons.
