1
What happens to the electrons of metals and non-metals when they react?
Electrons are transferred from the metal to the non-metal.
2
Why do electrons transfer from a metal to a non-metal during a chemical reaction?
So they both achieve more stable electronic structures
3
What happens to metals and non-metals when the electron is transferred?
The metals become positive ions
The non-metals become negative ions
4
What is an ionic compound?
The finished products after electrons transfer from 1 element to another during a chemical reaction
5
How do you show an ionic compound on an electron diagram?
You draw the 2 ions, with 1 electron transferred. Make sure the electron transferred still has the same symbol as it was in the previous element, as it did not change at all.
6
How are the ions in an ionic compound arranged?
In a regular way
7
What is the regular arrangement of ions in an ionic compound called?
A giant ionic lattice
8
How are the ions in an ionic compound held together?
By ionic bonds
9
Which directions do ionic bonds act in?
All directions
10
What are ionic bonds?
They are strong electrostatic forces of of attraction between positively charged ions
