C4 (chemistry) Flashcards
(91 cards)
What is an alloy? Give two examples
mixture of two or more different element e.g steel and bronze
State the structures on a metal
Regular layers
Lattice structure
Soft and malleable
State the structure of an alloy
Particles are different sizes
Irregular structure
Hard
What do all acids contain?
Hydrogen
What does acidic solutions produce?
H+ ions
What does aqueous mean?
Dissolve in water
What do alkaline solutions release?
Hydroxide ions (OH)
What is an indicator?
Chemical that change colours to tell you whether a colourless solution is acidic or basic
What is a PH Probe?
Devices used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance
What doe pH stand for?
Potential hydrogen
What is an acid?
A substance that produces H+ ions in aqueous solution
What is a strong acid?
Completely ionised in aqueous solutions to form H+ ions
What is a weak acid?
Partially ionised in aqueous solutions to form H+ ions
What is neutralisation?
A chemical reaction between an acid and alkaline to form a neutral solution (pH7)
What is titration?
A very accurate experimental technique, used to find unknown concentration of a solution
Define concordant?
Results are very close to each other (within o.1 cm3 of each other)
What colour flame does potassium make when it is reacted with oxygen?
Lilac
What colour flame does sodium make when it is reacted with oxygen?
Orange
What colour flame does lithium make when it is reacted with oxygen?
Red
What is oxidation?
A substance that gains oxygen
What is reduction?
A substance that looses oxygen
State three observations when a metal and an acid is reacted together?
Metal dissolves
Gas is produced so there is fizzing
Temperature change
How could you test for hydrogen?
Lit splint to make a squeaky pop sound
State three observations when metal and water is reacted together?
Metal will dissolve
Temperature increase
Fizzing because gas (hydrogen) is made
