The Chanak Affair
-Britain asked for military help in the case of a dispute with Turkey
-Prime Minister Mackenzie replied that only the parliament of Canada could decide whether it would help Britain or not

-First international treaty signed by Canada without British involvement

The King-Byng Affair
-Governor General of Canada, Julien Byng (a Brit), didn’t want to follow the instructions of the Prime Minister (to call an election)
-The Prime Minister was determined to have the role of the Governor General defined and reduced at the next Imperial Conference in England

-Canada and the other Dominions would now be self-governing and independent nations

-Canada became completely self-governing
-Britain could no longer make any laws for Canada, except for:
1. Constitutional changes, which would have to be made in Britain
2. The British Privy Council remained the final court of appeal for Canadians
