What are the nine economic signs?
Sales, Wages, Prices, Production, Profits, Business Failures, Demand for Goods, Labour Unrest, and Unemployment
What is a “dust bowl”?
An area where strong winds blow dry soil into the air, creating frequent storms. Ex: the Palliser Triangle.
What is “rust” as it pertains to grain crops?
A fungus disease that kills grain crops nearing maturity. The maturing grain stalk weakens and the seed head falls from it.
Describe the On to Ottawa Trek.
-June 3: 1,800 men, organized by the communist-sponsored Relief Project Workers’ Union, set off walking to Ottawa
-June 14: Picked up other protesters along the way and arrived in Regina with 2,000 men
Describe the Regina Riot.
-Bennett agrees to meet with a small group of leaders in Ottawa
-July 1: Some leaders present their grievances to locals of Regina and are arrested
-A conflict lasting hours breaks out in Market Square
-1 city detective died, many police injured, 130 arrested
Describe Roosevelt’s New Deal.
-Focused on three major areas: promoting recovery, providing relief to the needy, and reforming investment and banking regulations
-Introduced unemployment insurance, old-age pensions, minimum wage, and a maximum work week.
Describe Bennett’s New Deal.
-Introduced a more progressive taxation system, a maximum work week, a minimum wage, stronger regulations of working conditions, unemployment insurance, health and accident insurance, a revised old-age pension, agricultural support programs, and a grain board to regulate wheat prices.
What is the Palliser Triangle?
An area that intersects the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, afflicted by drought through 1929-1937.
