What was Operation Sea Lion?
Germany’s plan to invade the UK after seizing control of British skies. Aimed to eliminate the UK as a base for military operations against the Axis powers.
What was a Messerschmitt 109? Why was it significant?
A fighter aircraft. Was a significant part of the Luftwaffe’s air force. Many British pilots during the Battle of Britain fought piloted Messerschmitts.
Who were the Observer Corps?
A civil defense organization. Spotted and identified enemy aircraft over Britain. They were awarded the Royal title by King George VI after their aid in tracking German aircraft crossing the coast in the Battle of Britain.
Explain the Battle of Hong Kong.
Nearly 2,000 soldiers in addition to two nursing sisters went to help Britain bolster its colony in Asia: Hong Kong.
Lasted 17 days
Less than 1,500 returned home
The Allies didn’t anticipate a Japanese invasion and were thus unprepared for it
Prisoners of war were treated inhumanely, enduring beatings, hard labour, and inadequate treatment
What did women do during the war?
Over 45,000 volunteered for active duty. These were non-combat roles, but they were critical nonetheless:
-Drivers of light vehicles
-Cooks
-Clerks
-Messengers
-Canteen helpers
-Laundresses
Were later called on to provide support for men in combat zones
-46 died this way
