Carbohydrates Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a single monomer called in a carboydrate?
Monosaccharide
What are the two monosaccharides called?
Glucose and sucrose
What is the group called that has one oxygen covalently bonded to a hydrogen?
Hydroxyl group
Are monosaccharides polar or nonpolar and why?
They are hydrophilic because they contain a lot of hydroxyl groups which are usually polor
How is a disaccharide formed? And what are three examples of disaccharides?
When two monosaccharides are joined together. Lactose, maltose and sucrose.
What does a glucose attached to a galactose form?
Lactose
What does a glucose attached to a glucose form?
Maltose
What does a monosaccharide glucose attached to a monosaccharide fructose form?
Sucrose
How is a polysaccharide formed?
When multiple monomers are joined together to make a polymer.
What are the three polysaccharides?
Starch, cellulose and glycogen
What macromolecule is produced by plants to store excess glucose?
Starch
What macromolecule is produced by humans/animals to store excess glucose?
Glycogen
Where is cellulose found
Plant walls
