Proteins Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are proteins?
Structural components in our cells and the also act as an enzyme to help in multiple body functions.
What are single monomers of a protein called?
Amino acids
What is it called when amino acids are formed together to create a long polymer?
Polypeptide “protein”
What are the three components that amino acids in protein contain?
Amino group, carboxyl group and the R group
What does the amino group contain?
One nitrogen atom covalently bonded to two hydrogens
What does the carboxyl group contain?
Carbon atom double bonded to a oxygen and sinle bonded to an oxygen that is single bonded to a hydrogen
What defines an amino acid?
The R group
What process links amino acids together?
Dehydration synthesis
What is the process of dehydration synthesis?
An oxygen and hydrogen are taken from the carboxyl group from a amino acid and from the other amino acid a hydrogen is removed.
What molecule is removed through dehydration synthesis?
Water molecule
What bond forms between two amino acids after a an OH has been removed from a carboxyl group of an amino acid and an H from another amino acid?
Polypeptide bond
