Lipids Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are triglycerides and what are they made up of?
Fat made of a glycerol molecule and three fatty acids
What are hydrocarbons and what are they made up of?
Fatty acids made up of long chains of carbons and hydrogens linked by nonpolar covalent bonds
What do fatty acids lack?
Oxygen and nitrogens
What are the two fatty acids
Saturated and unsaturated
Are fats hydrophilic?
No they are water fearing hydrophobic
What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids
Saturated fatty acids are saturated with hydrogens and unsaturated they are not
Why do unsaturated fatty acids have less hydrogens?
The double bond in the middle between two carbons
Which fat has kinks in the chains and what do they do?
Unsaturated fats that cause the fatty acids to not be close together
Oil is an example of which fatty acid?
Unsaturated
Where is cholesterol found?
In an animal cell membrane
Where are phospholipids found?
In a cell membrane
Which lipid is important to both animal and plant cells?
Phospholipids
What makes up a phospholipid?
A single polar head and two non polar fatty acid tails
What are waxes in plants for?
Repelling water
What are steroids?
Hormones such as testosterone and estrogen
