cardiac cycle Flashcards
describe the path of blood through the heart
vena cava, right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary artery, lungs.
pulmonary vein, left atrium, left ventricle, aorta, body.
name the valves in the heart and describe their location
atrioventricular valves (between the atrium and ventricle on both sides), sumi-lunar valves (in the arteries as blood leaves the heart)
compare single and double circulation
single- blood passes through the heart once on each circuit of the body, double- blood passed trhough the heart twice on each circuit of the body
what is diastole?
atria relax and begin to fill with blood, atrioventricular valves open, ventricles are relaxed so theres a lower pressure and blood enters from the atria, arterial pressure is high, semilunar valves close to prevent backflow of blood
what is atrial systole?
atria contract so have a higher pressure, ventricles are relaxed so have a lower pressure, atrioventricular valves open, blood flows from atria to ventricles
what is ventricular systole?
ventricles contract so there is a higher pressure, atria are relaxed so there is a lower pressure, atrioventricular valves close to prevent backflow of blood, semilunar valves open, blood flows from ventricles to arteries
explain how valves control the flow of blood through the heart?
valves prevent the backflow of blood, they open when the pressure in front of the valve exceeds the pressure behind the valve.
