what has made the epidemic worse in botswana (6)
There is a young population, and the virus is more easily transmitted in women. Young women (ages 15–24) who have HIV in Botswana outnumber young men with HIV by more than two-to-one.
People were unaware of the risks so didn’t pay it attention
High international and internal economic migration, they stay for a while for some money and then go back and bring the disease back home. They are young (20s) and they are men. More chance of casual sex/prostitution
Denial, the president wouldn’t admit it existed, government would ignore it so there would be no attempts to lower the transmission
Stigma of having the disease/people ashamed of having the disease and so didn’t get tested and transmitted it
Contaminated blood supplies in hospitals
HOW HAS THE EPIDEMIC AFFECTED MORTALITY
more people die
in 2002, how many people died from AIDS
around 18,000
HOW HAS THE EPIDEMIC AFFECTED FERTILITY
Before some medication, it was very easy for it to spread mother to child, meaning as so many people got it it would also mean less children to reduce the risk of them getting it
HOW HAS THE EPIDEMIC AFFECTED POPULATION STRUCTURE
It reduced the population by thousands but also made it much more unbalanced with it being very big at the bottom so youthful and very thin in the ageing/middle and it becomes bigger again(not as big) around the top. Which means there aren’t many middle aged adults
social effects of the epidemic (3)
It affect everyone even if you don’t person in your family/friends might
Loss of education, food because of the loss of workers in farms, clothes, opportunities for children as more of their families get infected and they are needed to stay at home to help out or to go to work to earn the money that guardians n no longer gain
More orphaned children(1.9 million orphans in south africa) with no one to look after them

economic effects of epidemic (3)
Poverty is higher among households affected by HIV/AIDS than among unaffected families
loss of income and increased spending on healthcare by the household
Tourism dropped, money lost, because people were worried about HIV/AIDS so wouldn’t go there.
WHY WAS SOUTHERN AFRICA/ BOTSWANA SO BADLY AFFECTED BY HIV
Many Botswanans are migrant workers. Migrants are at particular risk of infection because of the increased likelihood of contact with prostitutes and other casual sex partners while away from home.
