Unilateral due to
•Sporadic- happen on its own or from
Trauma or
-Iatrogenic- occurred from surgery e.g
•Laser for ROP
•Intraocular surgery
Classification bilateral
Autosomal dominant inheritance
When can it be diagnosed?
•Pre School Vision Screening
6-8 week check
Newborn examination
How else can it be diagnosed
•Family history
•Screening for other condition
•Downs
•Poor visual behaviour
•Nystagmus
•Exotropia
•White reflex on photos
Visual impact
It can happem anywhere on lens- capsule, nucleus or
Cortex
Investigation
Bilateral cataracts will always be investigated
Unilateral isolated cataracts usually not investigated
Based on existing history and risk factors
Other cateracts
White cateract- can affect any bit of the lens
Oil droplet cateract- enzyme deficiency unable to process milk
