Cell Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is spontaneous generation
The belief that living things can come from non living matter
What/who does the cell theory apply to
All living things
What are the 3 points of cell theory
- All living things are made of 1 or more cells and materials made by these cells
- All life functions take place in the cell making them the smallest unit of life
- All cells are produced from pre existing cells through cell division
Microscope observations are affected by what 2 factors
Contrast and resolution
What is contrast
Ability to see differences between structures
What is resolution
Ability to distinguish two structures that are close together
What are the two types of cells
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic
What kind of system are cells
An open system
What does a eukaryotic cell have that a prokaryotic cell does NOT
A nucleus!
What are the 5 main structures of a cell
- Cell wall
- Cell membrane
- Nucleus
- Cytoplasm
- Organelles
What is the purpose of the cell wall
Provide strength and support, made of cellulose
Purpose of the cell membrane
Protective barrier, semi permeable, maintains balance inside the cell, also has two parts: Phospholipids bilayer and Proteins
Purpose of the nucleus
Directs all cellular activities only in Eukaryotic cells
Purpose of cytoplasm
Gel like substance containing nutrients needed for cellular activities
Purpose of organelles
Small tiny Working units within a cell
There are many kinds
What are the 7 examples of organelles and their roles
Mitochondria, Endoplasmic Reticulum, Ribosomes, Golgi Apparatus, Lysosomes, Vacuoles and Vesicles, and Chloroplasts
What is different between plant cells and animal cells
Plant cells contain Chloroplasts and cell wall
Animal cells contain centrioles and lysosomes
