Transport In Plants Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is transport in plants
It is the movement of water, minerals, and glucose
Transport in plants occur as a result of
Adhesion
Cohesion
Root pressure
Transpiration pull
What is adhesion
The attraction of water molecules to other types of substances (example: xylem wall)
What is cohesion
The attraction of water molecules to other water molecules
Occurs because water is a polar molecule
Positive end of molecule attached to negative end of another
What is root pressure and what is it caused by
Caused by the swelling of root swells
It forces water up the xylem
It results from water being drawn in by osmosis causing the root cells to swell
Where does water transport begin in plants
It begins at the roots
What is the process of water transport in plants
Water is drawn from the roots up the stem to the leaf (high pressure to low pressure) diffusion
In the leaf the water is used for photosynthesis or evaporates from the stomata
What is transpiration pull
Pull caused by water molecules evaporating which pulls close/near water molecules up
Is a result of cohesion
Forced water up the xylem
Where does evaporation occur in the plant
Occurs in the stomata
Is called transpiration
What is turgidity
How the plant allows itself to hold up to the sunlight for photosynthesis
Is caused by water filling the cells, making them turgid
