Q

G0 phase

A

Some cells do NOT go through the entire cell cycle.
These cells enter G0 phase or or resting state.
Cells no longer reproduce
Ex: Nerve cells

Q

mitosis

A

Mitosis is the division of the nucleus and the replicated DNA.
Cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm (NOT part of mitosis).
A parent cell produces two daughter cells with exact same DNA.

Q

more mitosis

A

We need new cells because we grow, and some of our cells dies.
Mitosis is a form of asexual reproduction.
Mitosis is a continual process that is divided four phases:

Q

step 1-prophase

A

“Prepare to split”
In animal cells, centrosomes appear (centrioles + spindle fibers)
In plant cells, only spindle appear
The nuclear membrane disappears

Q

step 2-metaphase

A

Chromosomes “Meet in the middle”
The chromosomes move to the center of the diving cell and line up on the cell’s equator

Q

step 3-anaphase

A

Chromatids “Apart”
The chromatids separate at the centromere and move toward opposite poles.
Once separated, the chromatids are considered chromosomes.

Q

step 4-telophase

A

“The END”
The spindle fibers disappear.
A nuclear membrane surrounds each set of chromosomes.

Q

cytokinesis

A

The dividing of the cytoplasm
In animal cells, the cytoplasm “pinches” and forms a cleavage furrow
In plant cells, a cell plate forms and later forms a cell wall.
