monohybrid crosses Flashcards
(6 cards)
monohybrid cross
“Mono” means one
A monohybrid cross is a cross between individuals regarding only one trait.
A Punnett Square is a tool used to aid in the prediction of outcomes in the cross.
punnett square steps
Determine the possible gametes the parents can give.
Place the gametes of one parent on the top, and the other parent on the left.
Drop the letters into each square.
phenotypic ratio
Phenotypic ratio: the ratio of phenotypes that appear in the offspring.
Ratio should be written (Dominant) : (Recessive)
genotypic ratio
Genotypic ratio: the ratio of the genotypes that appear in the offspring.
Should be written
(AA) : (Aa) : (aa)
test cross
Process used to determine an unknown genotype of an organism
To perform a test cross:
Cross the individual with an unknown genotype with a homozygous recessive individual.
Analyze the phenotype ratios of the offspring.
test cross results
If the offspring is 100% dominant, then the unknown is probably homozygous dominant.
If any offspring is recessive, then the unknown is heterozygous.
