Eye Flashcards
(23 cards)
Pathway of sight
Cornea Aqueous humor Iris/Pupil Lens Vitreous humor
Fovea/Macula Retina Rods/Cones Optic nerve Brain
Cornea
Clear outer part of the eye
– Helps focus in front of the eye
Aqueous humor
Thin watery fluid that fills the space between the cornea and the iris
Gives the front of the eye it’s form and shape
Iris
Colored part of eye regulates the amount of light entering the eye
Pupil
Opening at the center of iris
Size of opening controlled by iris
Lens
Clear part of the eye behind the iris
Focus light onto retina allows focus on near and far objects
Vitreous humor
Clear gel filling the inside of the eye
Holds shape of eye
Retina
Light sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eyeball
Sends electrical impulses to the brain – Contains the macula and fovea
Retinal scan
Identification through distinguishing marks of the retina
Macula
Small, sensitive area of retina
Central vision
Contains fovea
Fovea
Center of the macula
Sharpest vision
High concentration of rods (B & W) and cones (color)
Rod cells
Located in retina
Modified neuron
Sensitive to light
Night vision , black and white
Cone cells
Located in retina
* Modified neuron
* Distinguish colors in daylight
Choroid
Layer of blood vessels that feeds the retina
Sclera
Whites of the eyes
Tough outer layer
Optic nerve
Bundle of sensory nerve fibers (over one million)
– Carries visual information to the brain (occipital lobe)
Eyelid
Skin cover structure
Protection, spreads tears, limits light entrance
Myopia
Near sighted
* Can only clearly see
objects up close * Lens focuses
light/image in front of the fovea
Hyperopia
Far sighted
* Can only see objects
far away
* Lens focuses
light/image in back of the fovea
Cataracts
Clouding of lens * Accumulation of
dead cells (protein
breakdown)
* Images look blurred
or fuzzy
Astigmatism
Irregular shaped cornea or lens (correctable)
* Focus on two or more points instead of one
* Blurred vision, headaches, eye strain
Glaucoma
“Silent thief of sight”
– Pressure gradually builds inside eye (retinal cells and optic nerve dies)
– Can cause irreversible blindness
Conjunctivitis (AKA pink eye)
Inflammation of the conjunctiva (clear membrane that covers the sclera)
* Usually caused by Bacteria or viruses
