spermatogenesis & oogenesis Flashcards
(9 cards)
spermatogenesis
Occurs in testes
Immature diploid sperm cells go through mitosis
Meiosis produces haploid spermatocytes
Sperm are continuously formed
Make several million sperm per day - about 1,500 per second
oogenesis
Occurs in ovaries
Egg development begins before birth. Females are born with 2 million immature egg cells.
Eggs are NOT continuously produced (menopause occurs around age 51)
Women ovulate (release one egg per month)
oogenesis has an
Unequal division of cytoplasm
oogenesis produces
one mature ovum (egg)
There polar bodies will die
in vitro fertilization
Fertility drugs cause release of many egg cells rather than just one.
The eggs are harvested and placed in a petri dish.
The eggs are fertilized with sperm.
Fertilized eggs are allowed to begin dividing..
and then they are implanted.
This procedure often results in multiple births.
amniocentesis
Often done when there is suspicion of genetic abnormality
Cells taken from amnion
Look for cells in metaphase
Organize information as a karyotype for analysis
identical twins
One egg is released and fertilized.
As it divides this egg splits in
two and each
develops.
fraternal twins
Two eggs are released at the same time
Each gets fertilized by a different sperm
