Cell: Mitosis and the Cell Cycle Flashcards
(6 cards)
Mitosis Phases and thier function
Prophase: the chromosomes condense and become visible under a microscope. Because they were copied, each chromosome consists of two identical strands called CHROMATIDS.
Metaphase: chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. The membrane around the nucleus dissolves.
Anaphase: the chromatids SEPARATE and the two daughter chromosomes are pulled to opposite sides of the cell.
Telophase: the daughter chromosomes stretch out and become thin. A new nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromosomes.
Cell Cycle phases and function
Interphase: The longest stage. Cells GROW and perform normal functions. The chromosomes COPY themselves to prepare for cell division.
Mitosis: Division of the NUCLEUS. made up of 4 PHASES (PMAT).
Cytokinesis: Division of the CYTOPLASM and ORGANELLES. The cell membrane pinches in to form two separate cells.
Chromatin
long, thread-like strands
of genetic material
Chromosones
tightly wound chromatin
Genes
sections of the chromatin that
control specific characteristics of an individual (eye colour, height, etc.)
Chromatid
Two identical strands that make up chromosones
