Q

Major Subdivisions of the circulatory system

A

Cardiovascular System – a closed   system with a pump, one-way valves and plumbing tubes

Q

Capillary

A

tiny blood vessels found in  tissues

Where exchange of materials takes place

Blood cells pass through in  single file

  Join arterioles and venules

Q

Blood (functions and make-up)

A

Function: to  transport all substances that must be moved within the
body (nutrients, wastes, gases, heat)
Blood is made up of a watery fluid and 3 different types of cells. All blood cells are formed in bone marrow (center of bones)

Plasma: liquid portion of blood; 90% water

Red Blood Cells (RBC): also called
erythrocytes
carry oxygen

White Blood Cells (WBC): part of the
immune system
destroys bacteria
 produce antibodies
 repair tissues

 Platelets: aid in blood clotting

Q

The heart (structure and function)

A

Mass is less than 2.2kg

About the size of a fist

Cardiac muscle tissue contracts at the same
time with a regular beat to move the blood
throughout the body

Heart rate depends on physical activity, stress, temperature and general health

Divided into four hollow chambers (two atria and two ventricles)

The atria receive blood returning to the heart. The ventricles push blood out of
 the heart

Q

Process of blood to/from the heart

A

PUMP#1 - Right Side of the Heart (DEOXYGENATED BLOOD)
1. Inferior and Superior Vena Cava
2. Right Atrium
3. Valve (1)
4. Right Ventricle
5. Valve (2)
6. Pulmonary Trunk*
7. Right & Left Pulmonary Arteries (DEOXY BLOOD)*

  1. LUNGS - where deoxy blood becomes oxygenated

PUMP #2 - Left Side of the Heart (OXYGENATED BLOOD)
9. Right & Left Pulmonary Veins*
10. Left Atrium
11. Valve (3)
12. Left Ventricle
13. Valve (4)
14. Aortic arch (aorta)
15. Descending aorta
16 To Body where the blood will become deoxygenated once again :)
