Cell Structure and Function Flashcards
(6 cards)
What is the function of the nucleus?
The nucleus controls cell activities, stores genetic material (DNA), and regulates gene expression.
What is the role of mitochondria?
Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell, producing ATP through aerobic respiration.
How does the cell membrane function?
The cell membrane controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell and provides structure and protection.
What is the difference between smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER)?
Smooth ER synthesizes lipids and detoxifies toxins. Rough ER synthesizes proteins and is studded with ribosomes.
What is the role of the Golgi apparatus?
The Golgi apparatus modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for secretion or delivery to other organelles.
What is the function of lysosomes?
Lysosomes contain enzymes that break down waste materials and cellular debris.
