Cells Flashcards
(31 cards)
What do material pass through in the membrane?
Pores
What is a selectively permeable membrane?
A membrane that only allows certain materials to pass through it
What 3 things does the membrane does for a cell?
- Separate contents of the cell from its surroundings
- Controlling the movement of materials in and out of the cell
- Interacting with the environment surrounding the cell
What is homeostasis?
Certain requirements an organism must satisfy to stay alive.
how do molecules move through the cell membrane?
Through diffusion
What is diffusion?
The movement of molecules from on area where hey are highly concentrated to an area where they are less concentrated.
What is the concentration gradient?
The difference between a region of high concentration and a region of lower concentration.
What is equilibrium?
Molecules being evenly distributed between 2 regions.
What is facilitated diffusion?
Specialized transport molecules speed the movement of molecules across a membrane. Can diffuse charged particles.
What is osmosis?
The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
What is a dilute solution?
A solution with less dissolved material in it than the concentrated solution.
What is a concentrated solution?
A solution with more dissolved material in it than dilute solution.
What is an isotonic solution?
A solution that has the same concentration of dissolved subtances as the living cell placed in it.
What is a hypotonic solution?
A solution of lower concentration than the substances dissolved in the cell.
What is cytolosis?
When so much water enters the cell that it is at a point of bursting.
What is turgor pressure?
The pressure in a plant cell due to osmosis.
What does flaccid mean?
A plant cell having low turgor pressure.
What does turgid mean?
A plant cell having high tugor pressure.
What is a hypertonic solution?
a solution with a higher concentration of dissolved substances than the cell.
What is plasmolysis?
The shrinking of the cell due to loss of water.
What is a solution?
A minor component of mixture that is uniformly distributed within a major conponent.
What is a solute?
The substance being dissolved in a solution
What is a solvent?
The liquid in which a solute is dissolved to form a solution.
What is passive transport?
The movement of materials across a cell membrane without the use of energy.
