Central Nervous System (CNS) Flashcards
(24 cards)
Extent in the Vertebral Column:
The spinal cord extends from the foramen magnum to the L1/L2 vertebrae
Termination Point:
conus medullaris.
Cauda Equina:
The collection of nerve roots below the conus medullaris, resembling a horse’s tail
Cervical Enlargement:
Supplies the upper limbs.
Lumbar Enlargement:
Supplies the lower limbs.
White Matter:
External region composed of myelinated and unmyelinated axons.
Gray Matter:
Internal region consisting of neuronal cell bodies.
Dura Mater:
Tough outermost layer.
Arachnoid:
Middle layer.
Pia Mater:
Delicate innermost layer.
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
Fills the subarachnoid space between the arachnoid and pia mater, providing cushioning for the spinal cord and brain.
Big Brain (Cerebrum):
Responsible for complex cognitive functions.
Little Brain (Cerebellum):
Regulates motor control and coordination.
Brain Stem
Components: Midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata.
Association Fibers:
Transmit impulses between gyri within the same hemisphere.
Commissural Fibers:
Transmit impulses between gyri in different hemispheres.
Occipital Lobe
Visual Processing
Temporal Lobe
Auditory Processing
Frontal Lobe
Personality
Parietal Lobe
Language Association
Hypothalamus
Functions: Regulates temperature, hunger, and thirst
Limbic System
Responsible for emotion.
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Production
Source: Choroid plexus.
Venous System Return: Through arachnoid granulations projecting into the dural venous sinuses.
