Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Flashcards
(25 cards)
Cranial Nerves:
These nerves emerge directly from the brain and brainstem, innervating the head and neck region.
Spinal Nerves:
These nerves emerge from the spinal cord and innervate the rest of the body.
Sensory (Afferent) Nerves:
Responsible for conveying sensory information from the body to the CNS.
Motor (Efferent) Nerves:
Transmit motor commands from the CNS to muscles and glands.
Somatic Nervous System:
Contains voluntary motor systems that conduct impulses from the CNS to skeletal muscles.
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS):
Involuntary system, conducting impulses from the CNS to cardiac muscles, smooth muscles, and glands.
Specific Cranial Nerves
Olfactory (I)
Accessory (XI)
Trigeminal (V)
Vestibulocochlear (VIII)
Facial (VII)
Hypoglossal (XII)
Vagus (X)
Abducens (XI)
Trochlear (IV)
Olfactory (I):
Special sensory nerves of smell.
Accessory (XI):
Innervates the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles.
Trigeminal (V):
Activates chewing muscles.
Vestibulocochlear (VIII):
Deals with balance and hearing.
Facial (VII):
Controls facial expression muscles and conveys taste sensations.
Hypoglossal (XII):
Innervates the tongue muscles.
Vagus (X):
Manages heart and digestive activities.
Abducens (XI):
Innervates the muscle that abducts the eye.
Trochlear (IV):
Innervates the superior oblique muscle.
Sensory Neuron Cell Bodies Location:
The cell bodies are located in the dorsal root ganglion.
Formation of Spinal Nerves:
Spinal nerves are formed by the ventral (anterior) root and the dorsal (posterior) root combining.
Immediate Division of Spinal Nerves:
Divided into the ventral (anterior) ramus and the dorsal (posterior) ramus.
Nerve Plexus
Definition: A network of nerves.
Types: Cervical, brachial, lumbar, and sacral plexuses.
Dermatomes
Definition: An area of skin supplied mainly by one spinal nerve.
Example: Dermatome around the belly button is T10.
Neuronal Connection
In ANS, two neurons are connected by a synapse - termed as preganglionic (presynaptic) and postganglionic (postsynaptic) neurons.
Synapse Location:
The synapse occurs at the peripheral autonomic ganglion (motor ganglion).
Sympathetic Division:
Known as the “fight or flight” response.
