Fundamentals of Nervous System Flashcards
(18 cards)
Sensory (Afferent) Neuronal System
Function: Gathers information and monitors changes inside and outside the body
Integration (Association) Neurons
Function: Processes and interprets sensory input and makes decisions at each moment.
Motor (Efferent) Neuronal Output
Function: Dictates a response by activating an effector or target organ.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Components: Brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Components: Cranial and spinal nerves.
Spinal Nerves:
8 Cervical
12 Thoracic
5 Lumbar
5 Sacral
1 Coccygeal
Sympathetic Nervous System
Function: Stimulates the body in high-stress situations.
Target Tissues of the Autonomic Nervous System
Smooth muscle, Cardiac muscle, Glands
Major Parts of a Neuron
Dendrites: Bring information towards the cell body.
Cell Body: Contains the nucleus and other organelles.
Axon: Takes information away from the cell body.
Neurons:
Excitable cells that transmit electrical signals.
Neuroglia:
Non-excitable supporting cells that surround and wrap neurons.
Myelin-Producing Cells
CNS: Oligodendrocytes
PNS: Schwann cells
Classifications of Neurons
Unipolar (Pseudounipolar) Sensory Neurons: One central branch to CNS.
Bipolar Neurons: Two processes; found in special sensory organs.
Multipolar Efferent Motor Neurons: More than two processes; the most common type.
Collection of Cell Bodies
PNS: Ganglia
CNS: Nucleus
Bundle of Fibers
PNS: Nerve
CNS: Tract
Epineurium
Outer layer
Perineurium:
Surrounds a fascicle
Endoneurium:
Surrounds an individual axon
