Q

Is water a renewable resource?

A

Water is a renewable resource because it can be recycled over a short period of time due to the water cycle.

Q

Where does water stay the longest?

A

Water stays the longest in Arctic ice sheets but is also found in groundwater, glaciers, oceans and large rivers.

Q

How does the water cycle work?

A

A dinosaur drinks water than urinates it out. His urine either gets absorbed by the groundwater or flows into rivers or lakes. Than that urine is evaporated to form water vapour. Than precipitated back down to earth. Than someone drinks it again.

Q

What is Groundwater?

A

Groundwater is water held within Aquifers or water-bearing rocks in the earths surface. Aquifers work like sponges.

9
Q

What can Groundwater be use for?

A

Ground water is essential to our survival, predominately those who are in semi-arid areas where groundwater is used as their water supply. Groundwater is vital for drinking, irrigation and industry use.

Q

What is an aquifer?

A

A permeable rock that is found below the earths surface which contains water, usually known as groundwater.

11
Q

What does permeable mean?

A

An object or material that allows liquid through it. Aquifers are permeable because they have holes which allows liquid to go throw them.

Q

What is Groundwater recharge?

A

Groundwater recharge is the process when surface water replenishes the groundwater through seeping into aquifers.

Q

What is an artesian aquifer?

A

An artesian aquifer occurs between 2 impermeable rocks which causes great pressure. Water will gush out or the earths surface as a result of this and can’t be stopped unless the pressure is reduced or it is sealed.

14
Q

How are groundwater and surface water interconnected?

A

They are interconnected because they are always depending on each other for their survival. Some rain is collected as surface water. That surface water seeps through pores to replenish the aquifers. That process is called groundwater recharge. Without surface water ground water wouldn’t be able to refill. They have a strong connection.

15
Q

What is Green water?

A

Green water is water that stays in the soil, stays on top of the soil or used in vegetation. Green water does not run into streams or replenish groundwater instead it is used for crops, forest, grasslands and savannas. Not for human consumption.

16
Q

What is blue water?

A

Blue water is fresh surface water and groundwater. This freshwater is found in lakes, rivers, wetlands, and aquifers.

17
Q

What is run-off

A

Run off is precipitation (rain) that is not absorbed by the soil and runs over the land and into streams.

18
Q

What does the 2.3 figure 1 map tell us?

A

According to the map, the two areas that receive the most rainfall are Tully and Hobart with on average over 2400 mm. Coastal areas have low evaporation rates because they are Close to the sea thus more water is left where as in the central of Australian there is a high evaporation rate leaving less water behind.

19
Q

What does SPICESS stand for

A
S-Space
P-Place
I-Interconnection
C-Change
E-Environment
S-Sustainability
S-Scale
20
Q

What is place?

A

Place refers to the location of objects or features on the earths surface. You can define the place of an object 2 ways, absolute location and relative location. Absolute is when you pin point the exact location on a map, the address. Relative is a description of the objects/features location from a known location. From Parade College go 50 m across the street to get to hungry jacks.

21
Q

What is Space?

A

Space can be defined as an area on earth. Each space has its own characteristics which determines its boundaries. The ocean has water. The land has grass

22
Q

What is interconnection?

A

Interconnection is the relationship between two places/things. E.g the MCG and Jolimont station. Many football fans go to Jolimont station after the footy for a way home.

23
Q

What is Change

A

Change can take place over a period of time or over an area. The degree of change occurring can be used to predict the future. If people can see Doreen is growing fast build more places there.

24
Q

What is Environment?

A

Can be defined as the physical and biological world that provides the necessary resources to support all life on earth.

25
What is Sustainability?
The ability of the environment to maintain its capacity to support all life on earth for a long time.
26
What is Scale?
Scale refers to the relation between the real size of something, and its size on a map, model or diagram.
27
What is improved water?
Improved water is water that is safe for human consumption. Improved drinking water has been taken form rivers and filtered so it is safe for our consumption. Fluorine is also added
28
What is unimproved water?
Unimproved drinking water is water that is not safe for human consumption and is not filtered. Some 3rd world countries don't have the luxuries we do and don't have the opportunity to have clean improved water therefore diseases like cholera, typhoid, dysentery and Malaria.
29
Is water a human right?
Water is a human right and is essential for survival. Water is more important than food. In hot conditions someone can only survive 2-3 days without water
30
What is a natural resource?
We depend on Natural resources for our survival. There are two types of natural resources, renewable and non renewable. Renewable resources can be replaced over a short period of time and non-renewable resources can be replaced over a long period of time. Solar energy is a renewable natural resource. Coal is a non renewable natural resource.
31
What are 3 non renewable resources that can be recycled?
Plastic, Aluminium and Glass
