Ch2: Output Devices Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is an output device?
Any type of hardware that makes information available to a user
What are some popular output devices for visual and audio output?
monitors
projectors
virtual reality
augmented reality
speakers
headphones
What does the term screen refer to?
the viewable area of a display device
What is a monitor?
separate screen with own power and housing
What is an example of an older type of monitor?
Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Monitor
How are newer flatscreen monitors different from CRT monitors?
They are thin, lightweight and use less electricity
Describe the structure of an LCD screen.
An LCD screen is in layers like a sandwich with a liquid crystal between two polarized filters
What type of screen are LCD screens most commonly used in?
Most flat screens
Explain how light passes through an LCD screen.
- Light passes through the first filter, then the crystal.
- The second filter is at an angle to the first so light does not reach it without current light.
- But when a current is supplied to the crystal, it twists so the light changes angle and points to the second filter, which makes it light up the display.
Color LCD screen splits light into separate cells for which colors?
red, green and blue
Are LCD and LED complementary monitor technologies or alternatives?
Complimentary
What do first generation LCDs use for backlighting?
What are they advertised as?
They use cathode fluorescent lamps for backlighting
They are advertised as LCD
What do most modern LCD monitors use for light backlighting?
What are they advertised as?
They use light emitting diodes for light backlighting
They are advertised as LED
What kind of technology do some higher end monitors and TVs today use?
Organic Light Emitting Diode or OLED technology which is very similar to LED and LCD except that OLED has semiconductor layers
What is a semiconductor layer?
an organic light emitting compound
