Q

How do group characteristics influence conformity?

A
  • Larger the size, greater the influence – only up to 4 ppl.
  • In unanimous groups, there is more pressure to conform than those w even 1 dissenter – having an ally makes it easier
  • Expertise + status of group members chose influence
  • If it’s hard to pinpoint reason why different opinions in groups, informational + normative influence are lessened

Q

What are three reason-based approaches to compliance?

A
  1. Norm of reciprocity: doing a favor for smb who then feels obligated to do favor in return
If favor not returned, violation of social norm + risk social condemnation
  2. Reciprocal concession technique (door-in-the-face technique) to get target person to make concession too
U ask for favor that other refuses, then ask for a smaller one you’re really interested in receiving so the person asked will feel compelled to math concession to honor the norm of reciprocity.
  3. Foot-in-the-door technique: a person first gets someone to agree to a small request before making a bigger one
