What happened to divorce stats in the 1960s?
Been a great increase. Number of divorces doubled between 1961-1969 doubled again by 1972. Upward trend continued peaking in 1993 at 165,000.
What has happened since then?
Numbers have fallen somewhat but still stood at 118,000 in 2012. Rate means that 40% of all marriages will end in divorce.
What’s one reason for the fall in number of divorcees?
1990s is that fewer people are marrying in the first place and are choosing to cohabit instead.
How many applications for divorce now come from women?
65%. Sharp contrast in past.
What’s the most common reason for a woman to be granted divorce?
Unreasonable behaviour of her spouse.
Who’s marriage is at greater risk of getting a divorce?
Marry young, have children before they marry and who cohabit before they marry.
