Chap 13-15 Pt 1 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is immunology?
The study of the genetic, biological, chemical, and physical characteristics of the immune system.
This field encompasses various aspects of the immune response and its functions.
What is an antibody?
A protein produced by plasma cells in response to foreign substances, also called immunoglobulins.
Antibodies play a crucial role in identifying and neutralizing pathogens.
What are substances that stimulate the production of antibodies called?
Immunogens.
Immunogens can be proteins, polysaccharides, or other molecules that trigger an immune response.
What is immuno suppression?
The body’s decreased ability to fight infections.
This can occur due to various factors, including certain diseases or medications.
What is an allograft?
A transplant between genetically different individuals (with different genomes) in the same species.
Allografts are commonly used in organ transplants.
What is a xenograft?
A transplant between individuals of different species.
Xenografts are often used in experimental settings or for certain medical applications.
Where do all blood cells originate from?
Hemocytoblasts, which are stem cells in the bone marrow.
Hemocytoblasts differentiate into various types of blood cells.
What are eosinophils?
A type of white blood cell that increases during hypersensitivity reactions and during parasitic infestation.
Eosinophils play a key role in the body’s response to allergens and parasites.
What is a pyrogen?
A substance capable of raising the body temperature.
Pyrogens can be produced by pathogens or by the body itself in response to infection.
True or False: Immunogens are the same as antibodies.
False
Immunogens stimulate the production of antibodies, but they are different entities.
Fill in the blank: Eosinophils increase during hypersensitivity and reactions and during _______.
parasitic infestation.
