Chapter 1 Flashcards
Introduction to the human body (51 cards)
Study of the structure of living things
anatomy
Study of the function of living things
physiology
Smallest particle of matter
Atoms
Made up by 2 or more atoms, held together by some kind of chemical bond.
Molecules
Structural unit of all living things
Smallest unit of life
Made of many molecules
Cell
Group of related cells
Having a common function
4 different
Tissue
Made of two or more tissues
Specific function
Organ
Several organs work together to accomplish a common purpose.
Organ System
Largest and most complex, Individual, single, living thing.
Organism
Study of large structures
Macroscopic
Study of small structures
Microscopic
Study of structural changes
Developmental
Fast acting control system controls the body using electrical signals.
Brain, spinal cord, and nerves
Nervous System
Eliminates nitrogenous waste, removing chemicals made by the body. Kidney, Urethra, Urinary bladder, ureter.
Urinary System
Produce offspring.
Male:
Female:
Reproductive System
Bones and Joints
Framework of the body, forms all blood cells, and stores minerals.
Skeletal System
Thyroid, Thymus, adrenal, pancreas, pineal, pituitary, and testis glands.
System of glands, secrete hormones, controls the body but not as fast as the nervous system.
Endocrine System
Oral cavity, esophagus, liver, stomach, small/large intestine, rectum, anus.
Breaking down food, somethings can’t be broken down so solid waste is then removed.
Digestive System
Lungs, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx.
Gas exchange, get air into body and remove carbon dioxide.
Respiratory System
Heart and blood vessels.
Blood transporting system, oxygen in blood.
Cardiovascular System
Red bone marrow, Thymus, lymphatic vessels, thoracic duct.
Fluid retrieval protects body from infection, special WBC that help fight infection.
Lymphatic System
Skin, hair, and nails.
Covers the surface of the body, makes vitamin d.
Integumentary System
Skeletal muscles, large enough to be seen and attached to bone.
Allows body to move, produces heat.
Muscular System
Ability to maintain stable/ balanced internal (inside) conditions. Like body temperature.
Homeostasis
