Chapter 2 Vocab Handout Flashcards
Chemistry (36 cards)
Anything that takes up space, has mass.
Matter
Capacity to do work.
Energy
A substance that cannot be broken down to simpler substances by ordinary chemical reactions.
Element
Smallest particle of matter that retains the properties of an element.
Atom
The number of protons in the atom
- Atomic number
The sum of the protons and neutrons in the atom
Mass Number
Atoms with the same number of protons but with a different number of neutrons.
Isotopes
Average of the relative weights of all isotopes of an element.
Atomic Weight
Outermost electron shell of an atom.
Valence shell
The number of electrons in the valence shell.
Valence Electrons
Chemical bond formed when electrons are transferred between atoms.
Ionic Bond
Chemical bond formed when electrons are shared between atoms.
Covalent Bond
Combination of 2 or more atoms held together by covalent bonds.
Molecule
Molecule with an equal distribution of charges.
Nonpolar molecules
Molecule with an unequal distribution of charges.
Polar molecules
Weak attractions between neighboring polar molecules or between different regions of the same molecule.
Hydrogen Bonds
Substance composed of 2 or more elements in a fixed ratio.
Compound
Substance composed of 2 or more components physically blended.
Mixture
Homogeneous (evenly mixed) gases, liquids, or solids.
Solution
Dissolving medium, substance present in the greatest amount.
Solvent
Substance that is dissolved, substance present in a smaller amount.
Solute
Heterogenous (Unevenly mixed) mixture.
Colloid or Emulsion
Heterogeneous mixture, solutes tend to settle out and are visible.
Suspension
Carbon based compounds that are usually large and complex.
Organic Compounds
