Almshouses
Places for the poor. older adults that could no longer care for themselves, homeless, and those suffering from mental illness to stay; early form of a hospital
Infectious illness
Occurs when a germ enters the body and causes sickness
Chronic illness
A condition or disease that people live with for a long period of time
Medicare
Health insurance plan for older adults and, in certain situations, the disabled, funded through federal taxes
Medicaid
Health insurance plan for low-income people and the disabled, funded through federal and state taxes
Managed care organizations (MCOs)
Insurance programs that worked to reduce the rising healthcare costs in the US in the late 1980s
Healthcare premium
The cost that the individual must pay every month toward their healthcare plan; when the individual is employed, this amount is usually taken out of the employee’s paycheck
Co-pay
A specific dollar amount or percentage that must be paid by the individual for each healthcare service received
Deductible
A certain amount of money that the individual must pay for healthcare services before the insurance company will start to pay for any services used; this is renewed at the start of every year
High-deductible health plan (HDHP)
An insurance plan with a higher deductible that a traditional plan. Generally a lower monthly premium, but the individual will pay more healthcare costs before the insurance company starts to pay
Client
A consumer of healthcare who utilizes any sector of the healthcare system
Consumerism
The belief that consumers drive choice and increase the amount of choices that are offered to people within our society
Consumer of healthcare
Anyone who accesses healthcare services or interacts with a healthcare agency or provider
Outpatient surgery
A surgical procedure that does not require an over night stay; it is preformed on the same day that the patient is admitted and discharged from the surgical center; also called ambulatory or same-day surgery
