Accountability of one’s choices and actions
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
Legislation created in 1970 that ensures that all employees have safe and healthy working conditions
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
A law that allows an employee to take a leave of absence from their job for and 12-month period for a certain medical needs without risk of losing their job
Mandatory reporter
Someone who, as part of their job, must report and abusive or unlawful activity immediately
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
A privacy law created in 1996 that protects all healthcare information that can be linked to a individual, known as individually identifiable health information
Informed consent
The right to know what treatment options are available and the risks associated with those treatments so that an independent and educated choice can be made about the options
Law
A rule that you are legally obligated to follow
Ethics
Principles of right and wrong that drive our behavior
Misappropriation
Intentionally using another person’s funds or belongings without that person’s permission
Negligence
When a caregiver does not follow the standards or scope of practice of the role that they are working in; not doing what a reasonable person would do in a given situation
Abandonment
When a caregiver walks away from their assignment prior to the end of the shift or before their replacement is there to relieve them, leaving their clients alone and at risk for harm
False imprisonment
When a client has been limited in their ability to freely move about their environment
Neglect
When care, treatment, or service is not provided, and the client is then harmed
Assault
Threatening a client with physical, mental, or emotional harm
Battery
Physically touching a client when you do not have permission to do so
Abuse
A single or repeated action that is purposeful and meant to inflict harm; it can be categorized by type, including mental, physical, emotional, and sexual`
Caregiver strain
When caregivers emotionally can give no more to clients and, because of this, start to treat clients or others poorly
Ethnicity
The particular national, racial, or cultural group that a person belongs to
Culture
A set of traditions and attitudes that are shared within a group of people
Culturally competent
The ability to understand, appreciate and interact with people from cultures or belief systems different from one’s own
