Acute care facility
A healthcare facility that provides short-term care for clients who have an immediate illness of injury
Joint Commission
An entity that accredits and surveys most acute care facilities in the US
Long-term care facility
Otherwise known as a nursing home, it offers care for residents that need skilled nursing care for a substantial length of time
OBRA
The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987, which issued many mandates in regard to care of residents, resident right, and the training requirements for nursing assistants
Ombudsman
A nursing home volunteer who helps protect the rights of the nursing home resident by investigating complaints or reports of violations of resident rights
RCAC
An acronym for residential care apartment complex, a facility comparable to senior apartment residences that offers minimal care
Assisted-living community
A facility that bridges the gap between living independently and living in a healthcare facility such as a nursing home
Resume
A one-page summary of your personal, academic, professional accomplishments
CBRF
An acronym for community-based residential facility, a type of assisted-living community
Hospice
Specialty end-of-life care for individuals who have less that 6 months to live
Respite care
Services that provide a safe and stimulating environment for older adults or developmentally disabled clients over the age of 18, normally during daytime hours
Scope of practice
The skills, the responsibilities, and the actions that you are permitted and expected to follow once your training has been completed
Chain of command
A hierarchical route of communication from one member of the healthcare team to the next that must be followed at all times
Delegated task
An action or job that a supervisor, usually a nurse, asks you to complete either verbally or by means of a written care plan or ISP
