Chapter 1: Motion and Equilibrium Flashcards
(19 cards)
Acceleration
The rate at which velocity changes with time
The change in velocity may be in magnitude or direction or both
m/s^2
Air Resistance
The force of friction acting on an object due to its motion in air
Equilibrium Rule
The vector sum of forces acting on a non-accelerating object equals 0
Net force= 0
Sigma F=0 Sigma means net force
Force
A push or a pull
Free Fall
Falling only under the influence of gravity; falling w/o air resistance
Friction
Restrictive force that opposes motion; When objects rub against one another
Exp: air resistance
Hang Time
The time that one’s feet are off the ground during a vertical jump
Inertia
The property of things to resist CHANGES in motion
Kilogram
The unit of mass
= the mass of one liter of water at 4 degrees C
Mass
Measure of inertia of an object
Net force
Combination of all forces that act on an object
Newton
Scientific unit of force
Speed
Change in distance during a time interval
delta d/delta t
Support Force
aka Normal (perpendicular) force.
The force that supports an object against gravity
Vector
An arrow that has magnitude and direction
Vector Quantity
A quantity that has magnitude and direction
Opposite of a scalar quantity
Velocity
Speed of an object and specification of its direction of motions
Volume
The quantity of space an object occupies
Weight
The force due to gravity on an object
weight = mass X gravity
