Chapter 2: Newton's Laws of Motion Flashcards
(7 cards)
Force Pair
Objects in an interaction that involves action force and reaction force
Interaction
A push or a pull; Force
Mutual interaction between objects during which each object exerts and equal and opposite force on the other
Law of Inertia/Newtons First Law of Motion
Objects, resistant to change, keep doing whatever they’re already doing
exp.: Objects at rest stay at rest unless an external force acts upon them
Acceleration/Newton’s Second Law of Motion
Acceleration and net force are directly proportional AND acceleration and mass are inversely proportional
Action & Reaction/Newton’s Third Law of Motion
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Whenever an object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts and equal and opposition force on the first object
Terminal speed
The speed at which the acceleration of a falling object terminates when air resistance balances its weight.
Terminal speed for various objects based on weight, size, and orientation
Terminal velocity
Terminal speed in a given direction (such as downward)
