MISC Flashcards
(9 cards)
Physics
Study of motion, force, energy, matter, heat, sound, light, atoms
Kinetic Molecular Theory
The idea that all matter is made up of tiny atoms that are moving and have tiny spaces between them.
Atoms/molecules interact
Matter exists in phases (liquid, solid, vapor)
Kinetic Energy & Temperature in Gases
Temp is proportional to kinetic energy (the velocity of the gas particles)
Temperature
Hotness or coldness of a system; based on The system’s avg kinetic energy (how fast its atoms are moving)
Mechanical Energy
When things rub together’ causes increase in temperature
External Energy
Total potential and kinetic energy of an object
Internal Energy
Total potential and kinetic energy of the molecules of an object. More complicated than external energy bc molecules have other, more complicated means of motion (pulsing, twisting, turning, etc)
Heat
Energy transferred to or from one system to another; based on the total internal energy [kinetic AND potential] of a system’s molecules (unlike temperature which is only based on the average kinetic energy)
Conduction (Heat)
When molecules transfer energy (as in conducting heat or conducting electricity); Poor conductors have hardly any spaces between the molecules, so there isn’t much room for the molecules to move/vibrate/generate heat?
