chapter 10 - reaction rates and equilibrium Flashcards
(10 cards)
le chatelier’s principle
when any conditions affecting the position of equilibrium are changed, the poisition of equilibrium will shift to minimise that change
(increased) conditions that affect equilibrium
pressure (gases) - shift to the side with fewer moles of gas temperature - shift to the endothermic side concentration - shift to the opposite side that the substance was added
Kc where A + B ⇌ C + D
Kc = [C][D] / [A][B]

colour of [CoO4]2+

effect of temperature on rate of reaction
increased kinetic energy, more frequent collisions and more successful collisions so increased rate
effect of concentration on rate of reaction
more particles in same volume, more frequent collisions so increased rate
effect of surface area on rate of reaction
more molecules available to collide, more frequent collisions so increased rate
effect of catalyst on rate of reaction
lowers activation energy by offering an alternative reaction pathway, more successful collisions so increased rate
effect of pressure on rate of reaction
decreased volume but same number of molecules, more frequent collisions so increased rate
