Chapter 12 - Electrochemistry Flashcards
(11 cards)
Electrochemical Cell
Any cell in which oxidation-reduction reactions take place
Electrodes
Strips of metal or other conductive materials placed in electrolyte solution
Anode
Always the site of oxidation
- Attracts anions
Cathode
Site of reduction
- Attracts cations
Galvanic (voltaic) Cells
House spontaneous reactions with a positive electromotive force
Electrolytic Cells
House nonspontaneous reactions with a negative electromotive force
Concentration Cells
Specialized form of a galvanic cell in which both electrodes are made of the same material
Rechargeable Batteries
Electrochemical cells that can experience charging (electrolytic) and discharging (galvanic) states
Surge Current
Above average current transiently released at the beginning of the discharge phase
Reduction Potential
Quantifies the tendency for a species to gain electrons and be reduced
Nernst Equation
Describes the relationship between the concentration of species in a solution under nonstandard conditions and emf
