Chapter 13 Flashcards
what do Dawkins and Krebs argue about communication
communication is not so much the
exchange of information between a signaler and a receiver but rather
an attempt by the signaler to manipulate the recipient
how do you know if signals are honest
If the signals being sent are either
impossible or, at the very least, difficult to fake.
as groups size increases what happens to communication
as group size increases, the benefits of a broad repertoire of sounds to communicate with other group members increases
communication in ravens
proximate: yelling is response to yelling by juvenile ravens attracts other young ravens, allowing them to overpower adult ravens
Ravens also communicate at night this reveals learning
honeybee dances
do this to alert other bees where food is and the different dances tell how far the food is from the hive ex: sickle dance when food was 20 meters away and waggle dance
how does temperature impact honeybees
bees in warmer climates did much better in individual learning tasks. Low temperatures lead to bees that are both poor foragers and poor communicators
how do ants communicate foraging related problems
use chemical makers (recruitment pheromones) and use sound production through vibrations
what behaviors are associated with birdsong
colony formation, flocking,
foraging, and sexual selection
how do birds and water striders communicate to attract mates
Male birds use birdsong to attract females during the mating season; male water striders use ripple communication to signal their location to female water striders, and so on.
