EXAM 3: 4/3 Flashcards

(6 cards)

1
Q

conjugation

A

Involves the exchange of genetic material between organisms.
Allows each organism to receive genes from others that have not been subject to mutations. Helps correct genetic errors from mutations. Increases genetic variety but does not increase the number of organisms.

Q

how does the amazon molly display parthenogenesis

A

Reproduces entirely through parthenogenesis (no males involved). Females perform a courtship ritual despite the lack of males. Ritual is necessary for the female to reach the correct chemical state for egg fertilization.
Eggs are fertilized by female sperm from a different species. Resulting embryos are genetically similar to the mother.
