Who were the Mountain Men?
Began the movement of American settlers west so that they could fur trap.
How did Tejanos feel about Mexico?
Neglected and resentful of Mexico (anti-govt. and institutional church)
Who was Stephen F. Austin?
Brought 300 American families to settle in Texas. Some settlers led by Austin and Sam Houston tried to make peace with Mexican leaders but failed.

Who were the Mormons?
Known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, led by Joseph Smith. His followers were forced to relocate due to persecution. Brigham Young led them to Great Salt Lake.

Fertile land in Oregon and economic troubles in the west led people to Oregon in the 1830s.
